Men <\/strong>(2022 Film) – Insidious Misogyny<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Men<\/em>,<\/em> a 2022 British film by writer-director Alex Garland<\/em>, left me reeling and utterly spellbound. Visually arresting, emotionally raw, its psychological depth both triggering and shattering, at once magnificent and profoundly terrifying. This dark fairytale carves open the festering core of insidious misogyny, entrenched patriarchy, and toxic masculinity. \u00a0<\/em>trailer here<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n

Men<\/em> masquerades as a folk-horror film, but like Stanley Kubrick\u2019s The Shinin<\/em>g, its true terror lies not in supernatural frights but in the stark reality it unveils. Misogyny\u2019s horror isn\u2019t in its monsters, but in its mundanity. A<\/span> relentless cycle perpetuated by men, birthing itself anew through each generation. The story follows Harper (Jessie Buckley<\/em>), a Londoner retreating to the English countryside to heal from witnessing her husband’s violent death. (His fall, man’s fall from the Garden of Eden, precipitated by Harper, Eve.) Yet, this pastoral escape offers no solace, instead plunging her into a surreal nightmare where every man she encounters, all chillingly portrayed by Rory Kinnear<\/em>, embody this entrenched patriarchy – essentially, all men are the same.
\n<\/span>
\nFar from a conventional narrative, ‘Men’ echoes the works of Peter Greenaway<\/em>, demanding viewers abandon the urge to chase a tidy beginning, middle, and end. Instead, its power lies in letting its vivid, unsettling images -seep into your consciousness, stirring primal responses. Women and men may indeed experience the film differently: for women, a visceral recognition of the ever-present threat of male violence; for men, perhaps a confrontation with their own complicity or lack of awareness.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Harper\u2019s tormentors shift through many incantations (all played by the same actor, Kinnear<\/em>), but all are essentially smug, patronising, controlling, predatory. From the dippy, inept landlord, Geoffrey to a naked stalker emerging from the trees. Each encounter amplifying the film\u2019s meditation on gaslighting and male sexual aggression. A\u00a0 background stress women endure daily, living every moment on alert for the next predator. Her ill-fated holiday becomes a microcosm of women\u2019s lived reality\u2014surrounded by men offering help that cloaks harm, their faces all blurring into Kinnear\u2019s<\/em> unsettling grin.
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"\"The film\u2019s climax catapults this tension into a grotesque body horror, as Garland<\/em> unleashes a ‘rolling birth’ sequence that\u2019s impossible to un-see. Every iteration of Kinnear\u2019s<\/em> male characters gruesomely births the next through a CGI vagina erupting from their bloated torsos, a monstrous chain of men unfolding from the grounds into the house.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Laden with references to the Sheela-na-gig<\/em> and Green Man<\/em>, Mother Earth<\/em>, this surreal spectacle transforms low-key menace into a full-on assault of flesh and symbolism, exposing masculinity\u2019s unchecked mutations. It\u2019s a visceral allegory for misogyny\u2019s self-perpetuation, each new form as threatening as the last. The vicar\u2019s sanctimonious victim-blaming. <\/span>A police officer\u2019s casual dismissal of Harper\u2019s naked, bloody intruder as \u201charmless\u201d sears as an indictment of the systemic failure toward victims of stalking and assault. <\/span>The film\u2019s broader point that real-world misogyny isn\u2019t so easily spotted as these exaggerated archetypes. And, the true horror, Garland hints, lies in the ambiguity\u2014when you can\u2019t discern if the man beside you is saviour or villain. Or does it matter\u00a0 – men are men.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Harper enters a tunnel (womb\/vulva) Mother Earth, the source of all life, she’s resonating and (literally) harmonising with nature, it’s magical –\u00a0 until the peace is shattered by (a) man\u2019s intrusion. The film operates on a profound, subconscious level, brimming with depth. Note here, if you soften focus, letting the imagery envelop you, a haunting skull emerges, a foreshadowing of death and sacrifice.<\/em>
<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

This film could inspire volumes of analysis. Its soundtrack is breathtaking and the acting is flawless. The color palette masterfully employs greens to symbolize Harper\/women\/nature, contrasted with a blood red for male violence. The forbidden fruit, split half red, half green evoking an assault on the natural world or two halves of an ununified whole.<\/span><\/h3>\n

At its core, Men<\/em> grapples with a crisis of our age: masculinity\u2019s toxic manifestations, from petty micro aggressions to overt violence. Masculinity is steeped in a misogyny so ingrained that men seldom notice or recognise it, warping their physical and mental well-being. It is rooted in traditional male roles and harmful beliefs that sprout from relentless societal conditioning, drilling into boys and men that they must: exude power and dominance; stand as unyielding protectors; be the providers; hide weakness and suppress their emotions. While the film\u2019s deeper resonance emerges from an unspoken dread – how can we break this cycle of male violence, ingrained patriarchy and toxic masculinity.<\/span><\/h3>\n
