Femdom & BDSM: Ethics, Consent, Power & Play
When a sub turned my blog post: 6 Reasons Why Men Should be Kept in Chastity or The Pleasures of Erotic Sexual Denial (see article here) into an AI-generated podcast; I was mortified when the artificial American hosts were so deeply concerned and offended by the content.
“She was so rude and abusive in the way she spoke to him… used phrases like desperate, pliable, and agreeable. Implying that by denying him sexual release, she can mould his desires to reprogram him. Threatening physical punishments if he doesn’t comply. She talked about steering him towards specific acts like being penetrated by a strap-on… or emasculation… like she’s suggesting someone’s inherent sexual preferences are somehow wrong and need to be corrected.” 🤣
Clearly, AI is not very intelligent when it comes to fet play, it struggles with the complexities of BDSM. Its literal interpretation of language hinders its ability to grasp the nuanced dynamics and the fantasy role-playing that is fundamental to D/s relationships. (Though perhaps the same thing could also be said for the Vanilla mainstream.) So it might be good for me to clarify the context for the body of work I’ve produced for this blog over the years. It is written from (my) the dominant viewpoint but within the framework of a consensual Femdom D/s dynamics – not as ‘tips’ for fostering abusive or coercive relationships!
Context Is King (or Queen here)
Maybe without proper context, some of the content from this blog could be misinterpreted as non-consensual or abusive. Those of us in the BDSM scene understand that we play within strict ethical guidelines, set frameworks and that on-going informed consent is paramount. Within ‘the scene’ we have our own terms, language, outfits, playspaces and equipment. This can be complicated to outsiders, (we even have a term called CNC/Consensual Non-Consent or Free Use.)
Adult Playtime
I believe D/s and BDSM play is healthy adult play. It’s playtime, a place to delve into our unconscious, primal and base sexual desires in an open, fun, safe environment. A source of relaxation to aid our emotional well-being; and stimulation to fuel our imagination and creativity. Dominatrices are not therapists, however, exploring our sexualities, early-developed fetishes or intense childhood experiences in a safe non-judgmental way can have a positive effect on our lives. For many people within the BDSM community, the psychological and emotional aspects of power exchange are what make it so intensely pleasurable. The key is that this power exchange is negotiated and consensual, with both partners (or more) fully understanding and agreeing to the rules and limits of their play. This might seem extreme, abusive or even cruel to those outside the BDSM community, but within an agreed framework it can be a form of mutually enjoyable erotic play. Of course this dynamic can become unhealthy, a D/s, like any form of intimate relationship, requires constant communication, negotiation and a deep understanding of each other’s needs and desires.
Yes there are still complex questions about power and control in relationships, even within a consensual framework. A chosen power imbalance, is still an imbalance. The issue lies not in the imbalance itself, but in how the person with power wields it.
There are issues surrounding the ethics of manipulating someone’s sexual desires for your own gratification. And the potential psychological effects on both individuals, emotional, physical, psychological and financial. However, for the overwhelming majority of those involved in D/s play, it is a mutually fun form of consensual erotic power play.
Ethics, Context & This Femdom Blog This blog is written from within the enclave of the femdom world, it primarily reflects (my) the dominant woman’s viewpoint. Men (2022 Film) – Insidious Misogyny
Men, a 2022 British film by writer-director Alex Garland, left me reeling and utterly spellbound. Visually arresting, emotionally raw, its psychological depth both triggering and shattering, at once magnificent and profoundly terrifying. Men masquerades as a folk-horror film, but like Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, its true terror lies not in supernatural frights but in the stark reality it unveils. Misogyny’s horror isn’t in its monsters, but in its mundanity. A relentless cycle perpetuated by men, birthing itself anew through each generation. The story follows Harper (Jessie Buckley), a Londoner retreating to the English countryside to heal from witnessing her husband’s violent death. (His fall, man’s fall from the Garden of Eden, precipitated by Harper, Eve.) Yet, this pastoral escape offers no solace, instead plunging her into a surreal nightmare where every man she encounters, all chillingly portrayed by Rory Kinnear, embody this entrenched patriarchy – essentially, all men are the same.
Far from a conventional narrative, ‘Men’ echoes the works of Peter Greenaway, demanding viewers abandon the urge to chase a tidy beginning, middle, and end. Instead, its power lies in letting its vivid, unsettling images -seep into your consciousness, stirring primal responses. Women and men may indeed experience the film differently: for women, a visceral recognition of the ever-present threat of male violence; for men, perhaps a confrontation with their own complicity or lack of awareness.
Harper’s tormentors shift through many incantations (all played by the same actor, Kinnear), but all are essentially smug, patronising, controlling, predatory. From the dippy, inept landlord, Geoffrey to a naked stalker emerging from the trees. Each encounter amplifying the film’s meditation on gaslighting and male sexual aggression. A background stress women endure daily, living every moment on alert for the next predator. Her ill-fated holiday becomes a microcosm of women’s lived reality—surrounded by men offering help that cloaks harm, their faces all blurring into Kinnear’s unsettling grin.
The film’s climax catapults this tension into a grotesque body horror, as Garland unleashes a ‘rolling birth’ sequence that’s impossible to un-see. Every iteration of Kinnear’s male characters gruesomely births the next through a CGI vagina erupting from their bloated torsos, a monstrous chain of men unfolding from the grounds into the house.
Laden with references to the Sheela-na-gig and Green Man, Mother Earth, this surreal spectacle transforms low-key menace into a full-on assault of flesh and symbolism, exposing masculinity’s unchecked mutations. It’s a visceral allegory for misogyny’s self-perpetuation, each new form as threatening as the last. The vicar’s sanctimonious victim-blaming. A police officer’s casual dismissal of Harper’s naked, bloody intruder as “harmless” sears as an indictment of the systemic failure toward victims of stalking and assault. The film’s broader point that real-world misogyny isn’t so easily spotted as these exaggerated archetypes. And, the true horror, Garland hints, lies in the ambiguity—when you can’t discern if the man beside you is saviour or villain. Or does it matter – men are men.
Harper enters a tunnel (womb/vulva) Mother Earth, the source of all life, she’s resonating and (literally) harmonising with nature, it’s magical – until the peace is shattered by (a) man’s intrusion. This film could inspire volumes of analysis. Its soundtrack is breathtaking and the acting is flawless. The color palette masterfully employs greens to symbolize Harper/women/nature, contrasted with a blood red for male violence. The forbidden fruit, split half red, half green evoking an assault on the natural world or two halves of an ununified whole.
At its core, Men grapples with a crisis of our age: masculinity’s toxic manifestations, from petty micro aggressions to overt violence. Masculinity is steeped in a misogyny so ingrained that men seldom notice or recognise it, warping their physical and mental well-being. It is rooted in traditional male roles and harmful beliefs that sprout from relentless societal conditioning, drilling into boys and men that they must: exude power and dominance; stand as unyielding protectors; be the providers; hide weakness and suppress their emotions. While the film’s deeper resonance emerges from an unspoken dread – how can we break this cycle of male violence, ingrained patriarchy and toxic masculinity.
