Netflix’s Bonding
The release of Bonding, a Netflix drama, is another factor in the rise of interest in prodominas. Tiff is a grad student in New York City who is moonlighting as a dominatrix but her job is a business, not a pleasure. When she reconnects with former high school BFF Pete, a recently out gay man, she recruits the cash-strapped man to be her assistant. The hilarity ensues…
The Scene’s reaction to the series has been hotly debated and very mixed. Many from the real-life community felt it offered a negative view of scene play with no consent, communication or real connection. And that this is unfortunately, is how the media always portrays BDSM. That it damages the the reputation of the dominatrix and prodom with it unsafe practices and encouraging of stalking. Others felt it does act to demystify the scene and make it less threatening to the mainstream.
I guess I feel, Bonding should be viewed as related to actual prodomming in the same way as Brooklyn Nine-Nine is to actual policing! The criticism, however, has made Netflix bring in some real dominatrices as consultants for the second season.
